In a difficult situation that gives way to waves of stress, anxiety, or anger, being calm is the first important step towards solving the problem. When you are upset, it is far more difficult to make good decisions. This is because in stressful situations, its much more difficult for the brain to analyse the consequences of our actions in advance.

But the first step to achieve this is to always remember that you cannot lose control. If you strive to not let yourself be overcome with nerves and anxiety, you'll be winning half the battle. So keep reading and we will explain some important steps you can to take to remain calm, no matter what kind of stressful situation your in.

On many occasions in order to keep calm, it is important to put distance (physical or mental) between ourselves and that which affects us. If you are in a stressful situation, or if you are arguing with someone, it is best to pause and retire to some quiet place to clear your inner thoughts.

Breathe in and hold the air in your diaphragm for a few seconds before breathing out again. This simple exercise will help you slow down your heart rate and it will reduce your stress levels. This point is crucial, because only when you lose tension, then you can find the calm that you need.

Try to notice when you're about to lose your cool and take effective action. Do not helplessly wander into situations where you completely lose control. When we're in a stressful situation, our body gives us some clues: the heart beats faster and the heart rate increases, your face gets hot and red, you usually raise your voice and, in the case of an extremely stressful situation, you'll feel tension building up in your back.

When you start to notice these symptoms, you should pause, take a deep breath and calm down, before considering whether this is the best time and place to resolve the issue.

A good way to keep calm and remain in control of a difficult situation is to do so with a cool head by taking a walk. Walking will help to regulate your respiration and stop your mind racing. Walk and focus your attention towards something else. This will help you make better decisions than those that come to you in the heat of the moment.

When you're in a situation of stress, discomfort or angst, stay away from foods full of sugar! Pastries or sweets are full of processed sugar and these only increase your energy levels, making you feel even more upset, because these are stimulating foods. Nevertheless, dark chocolate releases dopamine and reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, so it is an excellent choice. Foods rich in vitamin C such as oranges or carrots are also great.

Drinking a relaxing tea is also a good alternative to keep you calm and it will wash away the tension.

Finally there is nothing better to stay calm than to make some changes in our daily routines that allow us to be less prone to stress. For example:

  • Daily exercise is important to help drain the tension and to keep stress levels low with its multiple health benefits.
  • To channel stress, do things such as yoga, meditation or pilates. These are recommended stress-busting activities.
  • Eating a balanced diet, believe it or not, has an important influence on your mood and the cortisol levels in your body.

Hi Liam,

Relying on trusted colleagues is an important thing to do and is a sign of strength, not weakness as some might claim. A code word might also a very helpful idea, but only if it is used sparingly in acute situations.
