Sodium Bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate is also a good substitute for Omeprazole as it works as a natural antacid that eliminates pain and heartburn. However, this home remedy is contraindicated for those who suffer hypertension or are required to follow a low sodium diet.

To take this remedy you only have to dissolve a tablespoon of soda in a glass of water and drink immediately, it is recommended to do so before the bubbles in the water appear.

Other useful tips

With all this said, it is important to know how you can prevent the occurrence of heartburn. Unless you have ulcers, this can be done with a few simple changes to your lifestyle. Here are some tips to eliminate heartburn from your life:

  • Invest in a healthy diet which is low in fat and where fruits and vegetables are in abundance.
  • Leave aside processed sugars and foods as these unbalance the bacteria in the stomach and increase the chances of heartburn appearing.
  • Chew foods thoroughly to make it easier to digest and avoid reflux.
  • Take an infusion of licorice or aloe vera every day to contribute to the proper functioning of your stomach.
  • Eat a yoghurt as an afternoon snack every day, so it will become normal for you to eat a food high in glutamine every day and enjoy a much healthier snack than a sandwich or pastry.

I have been on PPI's for a while and want to get off of them. How do I transition from drugs to natural remedies? Do I stop taking them cold turkey, and replace the medicines with natural alternatives?
OneHowTo Editor
You should never change prescription medication without first consulting your doctor.

I have been taking one 20mg OMEPRAZOLE for about 6 mos and I believe that there is a limitation in taking this heartburn medication - how long is it - it helps me from heartburn and my gastro- interologist suggested taking OMPEPRAZOLE but he did not tell me for HOW LONG. Can you advise me?
OneHowTo Editor
Hi Helma,

Unfortunately we cannot advise you on how long to take this medicine as it relies on your doctor's diagnosis and treatment plan. However, we can say that long term use of Omeprazole is not generally recommended without a doctor prescribing a long term treatment. Your doctor should have informed you of how long to take it or at least put the dosage on the pack. You should speak to your physician for clarification.

Dairy products cause inflammation. Why would that be recommended?
OneHowTo Editor
They are recommended due to their glutamine content. The best is to take yogurt due to it being probiotic too.
Hope this helps

I have been taking Omprazole for years, I would like to stop. Do I take the lemon juice or vinegar or do I take both?
Ali
You may start with lemon water first and then try vinegar. Lemon, warm water, tblspn honey in the morning. If u can tolerate, then try vinegar instead.

I have Barretts Syndrome & have had serious bleeding ulcers... I've been on Omeprazole for about 5 years .... twice a day. Prior to that ~ gastric bypass 10 years ago....(a Dr had me on anti inflammatory drugs for years & my stomach basically blew out ~ because of the "pouch" from bypass!!!) Wasn't diagnosed with Barretts until ulcers... I certainly don't want side effects from this now......yikes! I've never had problems with heartburn or anything like that ...
Gerry Alanguilan
Lemon? Vinegar? But aren't those acidic and would make your acid reflux worse?
Alba Charles (oneHOWTO editor)
Hi Gerry, it's true, lemon and vinegar are acidic and if you consume them in large amounts they can actually cause acid reflux. However, mixed with water and taken in small quantities it becomes alkaline and it neutralizes the acid that causes acid reflux. Lemon juice also creates calcium carbonate, which balances pH's levels and neutralizes digestive acids.

I take Lansaprazole. Does this do the same as omeprazole re the dementia issue plz?
Alba Charles (oneHOWTO editor)
Lansoprazole is usually more effective than Omeprazole, however it is still a proton pump inhibitor. Try using some of the natural remedies in the article as they might ease your acid reflux problems in a healthier way.

I am type 2 diabetic, I have been taking omeprazole for about 8 years now and suffer from heartburn regularly, i also have severe pancreatitis, and IBS i take 22 pills a day for different things, but mainly diabetes, anyway my point is, isn't it ok to take these substitutes ie sodium bicarbonate, Apple cider vinegar, being a type 2 diabetic ?? Thank you.
Alba Charles (oneHOWTO editor)
Apple cider vinegar can actually be good for diabetes, so you shouldn't have any problem. However, visit your doctor and ask for the opinion of a specialist.

Roy: I am a 70-year-old male with diabetes (I manage it with 500 mg cinnamon 2-3 times daily and my A1C was normal at my last physical). I have been on omeprazole for many years due to Schatzke (sp?) ring but am now ready to eliminate it after reading recent news about its effect on kidneys. I will be trying either apple cider vinegar or lemon juice recommendations on this website. I also take curcumin for various inflammations such as arthritis, etc., including diabetes. Please try these to see if you can eliminate some of your harmful meds from your regimen. I'm also taking chlorella to reduce artery plaque. It binds to heavy metals and carries them away thru the kidneys. It also frees up calcium in your vessels so as to be absorbed and used by the body. Best to you!
