A sign of old blood

Often women experience dark brown period blood during the start of the menstrual cycle. This is because this blood is old.

For some women blood flow during menstruation is slow as compared to others. For such women the lining is not expelled completely and hence the uterus does not become squeaky clean. On the next period this leftover lining comes out in the beginning as dark brown period blood.

Pregnancy

If scarce dark blood is discharged for 3 -4 days then it might be implantation bleeding. It occurs during early pregnancy and occurs in a few days following conception. However, it is important to know that this discharge isn't exactly period blood. It is mainly termed as brown blood discharge.

Miscarriage

If dark brown or black vaginal bleeding occurs during pregnancy then chances are that you have suffered a miscarriage. This type of bleeding is abnormally heavy and laden with large clots. It slowly lessens and over time foul smelling scanty brown bleeding occurs.

If this type of blood discharge is accompanied by severe pain and signs of shock then it may be ectopic pregnancy. In such case immediate medical attention must be taken.
