Choosing the stones

The stones used in a hot stone massage therapy are usually made up of basalt, probably because this material retains heat for a longer period of time. They are also smooth to massage, and do not cause any irritation on the skin. The stones should be flat on one surface, so that they can rest on the body without slipping off. So, choose your stones wisely.

Preparing the stones

First of all, wash the stones properly in a sink or basin, and preferably use an antibacterial soap to do so. Once they have been cleaned thoroughly, rinse them well. To warm them up, immerse them in heated water, and let them reach a warm but still tolerable temperature to touch.

Placing the stones on the body

Place the heated stones on key acupressure points of the person’s body, including the hamstrings, back, between the toes, arms, etc. These acupressure points are known to release energy flow, and also promote the healing process of the body. Heat from the stones will penetrate into the skin, thus promoting better flow of blood, releasing toxins, and relaxing the muscles.

Moving the stones

After resting the stones for 5-10 minutes, start moving them gently while applying a little pressure. Focus on the sore, tense areas of the body. The pressure that you apply while moving the stones is very important, as little pressure may not give the desired effects, and too much pressure can cause damage to the person’s muscles and tendons.

Applying other massage techniques

Once the person’s body has fully relaxed and muscles have loosened due to the warmth of the stones, try combining the hot stone massage technique with other massage therapies, such as deep tissue massage or a Swedish massage. You can use these massage techniques either after removing the hot stones, or with the stones still on the body. You can also combine this type of massage with essential oils too.
