Sweat, as well as being annoying, is a cause for concern for many people. Those who sweat excessively feel uncomfortable and insecure; they tend to think that the whole world is staring at them, though this is rarely the case. It is a complex that can eventually lead to insecurity, especially at times when you have to speak in public or when you have a meeting with someone important. With this on mind, we at OneHowTo are going to shed some light with some tips on how to sweat less and finally put this issue to bed.

One of the first tips is to camouflage sweat. In most cases, the type of sweating is concentrated in the underarm area. Luckily, there are more and more ways of hiding it. All problems are easier to deal with when you have the right mindset.

To hide sweat, plan your outfit well. The type of clothing you choose will have a significant effect on this aspect. Most of the time, the main issue for people who sweat profusely has more to do with the fact that others notice it. With this in mind, choosing the right clothes is fundamental. Here are some tips on what to wear for important occasions:

  • Loose clothing is a must. This reduces friction between the fabric and the body, thus preventing the activation of sweat glands.
  • Do not wear clothes with strong colors (colors that conceal sweat are black and white).
  • Use so-called "base layers", very tight clothing that stick to the skin, made with special material that prevents the sweat from reaching the top layer of clothing. Don't wear clothes that make you sweat a lot such as nylon or spandex.
  • Using cotton clothing also helps hide the marks.

In addition to clothing, care must be taken with food. Avoid spicy foods and caffeinated drinks because they can increase sweating. Coffee is a potent diuretic that increases the capacity of the sweat glands. Furthermore, caffeine in general stimulates and excites the nervous system.

It is also important to have good hygiene to prevent body odour. At least one daily shower is essential, paying special attention in cleaning those areas that sweat more. When you finish washing, remember to dry yourself well and apply plenty of antiperspirant or talcum powder, which absorb the sweat before it reaches your clothes.

In addition, there is a homemade treatment that you can carry out to prevent sweat and put your mind at rest when you have to be out in public. All you need is the juice of a lemon and 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to prepare this ointment. This will greatly help in reducing sweat, as well as preventing bad odour.

The reason this treatment works is that the acid of the lemon dries up the whole area, whilst the bicarb keeps the area free of moisture, both of which are ideal for controlling excess sweat. To take advantage of these properties, all you need to do is to combine these products and, when the paste is formed, apply it in the relevant area. Leave for 10 minutes and then rinse with water. Repeat this process 3 times a week and you'll slowly start noticing results.

Some people suffer from an imbalance in the body, which is known as hyperhidrosis, i.e. excessive sweating. In this case, it is best to consult a specialist who can evaluate the situation and prescribe the necessary oral medicine. This will reduce acetylcholine function and prevent the stimulation of sweat glands.
