Why do I Have Small Bumps on My Scalp?

Sometimes due to environmental factors or the cosmetic products we use, small bumps can develop on our bodies. These are often pimples, spots or other little irritants that eventually clear up and are forgotten about. Whilst it's common to see these on our skin, sometimes they also develop on our scalp. These can be a little harder to treat, as they are often covered by hair and with being on our head, are sometimes not visible to ourselves! Whilst they can be a nuisance, there are several reasons you may have small bumps on your scalp, and here at OneHowTo, we're going to answer the question, why do I have small bumps on my scalp, so hopefully you can prevent their return in the future.

Folliculitis

Folliculitis is a common problem that can happen anywhere on the body where there is hair. It is an inflammation of one or several hair follicles and often appears as small red bumps, sometimes pimple-like, where the hair protrudes from the skin. The area can sometimes be painful or itchy due to the irritant from the infection and sometimes causes the hair to temporarily stop growing in that area. Shampoos, conditioners or other hair products can sometimes trigger folliculitis and lead to the small bumps on the scalp. A visit to the GP and a course of antibiotics is sometimes necessary to clear the infection up.

Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis can cause red bumps on the scalp and sometimes reaching up to the hairline. It is usually in patches, however this can be difficult to decipher for yourself when it's hidden in your hair so ask somebody to take a look if you're unsure. Scalp psoriasis can also cause dandruff, if you suffer from this condition take a look at how to remove dandruff naturally at home for some natural remedies. These bumps are often itchy but not painful unless excessively scratched. Shampoos and conditioners can often make this condition worse, so your GP may prescribe a gentle medical shampoo to use until it calms down. You can also try a specific natural hair wash.

Seborrheic dermatitis

Sebhorrheic dermatitis is also a common cause of small bumps on the scalp. This is another skin condition that primarily affects the scalp and can be brought on through stress, genetics, cold dry weather or a yeast that can live on your skin. Men and women with oily hair can often be more prone to this condition. This condition can often look similar to other forms of dermatitis so it is wise to visit your GP for a proper diagnosis and treatment. If you suffer from this condition, take a look at home remedies for seborrheic dermatitis for some helpful advice.

If you are suffering from any pain or discomfort caused by bumps on your scalp it is advisable to visit a doctor and find out what the cause might be. Bumps appearing on our bodies is not uncommon, but if the condition is causing pain and discomfort, seek professional medical advice!
