How to Prevent Rhinitis

Rhinitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes in the nose. Its common symptoms are itching, sneezing, watery mucus and an inflammation of the throat. Furthermore, when the patient goes to the doctor, they will see that the insides of the nostrils are red and swollen. Having rhinitis causes headaches and malaise, and it also can be a step towards sinusitis. Rhinitis is derived from an allergy, but it can become chronic. To avoid so, in this OneHowTo article we show you how to prevent rhinitis.

Steps to follow:

1

To well and truly prevent rhinitis, the first thing you should know is what type of allergy you have to combat. Allergic rhinitis is caused by an allergy that is seasonal, i.e., typical of a season in the particular year, or perennial allergies, derived from particles or elements in the environment continuously.

Rhinitis that is derived from an allergy that is seasonal (also known as hay fever) is the easiest to treat and even easier to prevent. In most cases, it is due to a pollen allergy, typical in the spring. Treatment with antihistamines is the most effective way forwards, however, there are some habits that can be done to prevent further fits and bouts of rhinitis:

  • Avoid leaving home in the morning, as there is a higher concentration of pollen. If you have absolutely no choice, it's important that you wear sunglasses.
  • Try not to go on long country walks. Don't waddle through parks or green areas full of plants.
  • Keep your windows closed at all times.
  • Use humidifiers at home to purify the air inside and keep the moist.
  • Keep your home clean of any dust.

To truly prevent rhinitis caused by an allergy you should take extra precautions, as there are certain substances that are normally in the environment such as nipping dust mites, festering mould, cast-off bits of crunchy dead skin, bum-fluff or urine from humans and pets alongside atmospheric fungi. Treatment for this type of allergy is done with antihistamines and another way to relieve symptoms is through nasal corticosteroids. To truly prevent rhinitis derived from this allergy, you can follow these wonderful guidelines and tips:

  • Always keep your house clean, especially with air conditioning filters.
  • Avoid having carpets, rugs or such haberdashery.
  • Wash your sheets and pillowcases once a week at high temperature (70 ° C).
  • Do not have houseplants in your home.
  • Try to avoid moisture after a bath, dry the walls in the most eloquent of fashions, and frequently wash your curtains.
  • Try not to have pets running around the home. If you do have any, wash and scrub the animal to remove any nasty particles which could penetrate the household. Collect and dispose of any loose hairs.
