People can be exposed to arsenic through airborne particles, drinking water and even as a result of eating foods high in arsenic. Heavy metal toxicity can can cause symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue and eczema, which can lead to the development of more serious health conditions. Most organic arsenic compounds are metabolized by the body and excreted through urine; however, inorganic compounds can remain for longer periods of time in hair and nails. It is important to reduce arsenic exposure and eliminate heavy metals from the body.

Reduce arsenic exposure

There are many pathways through which arsenic can get into your body. It may be found in the air you breathe, it may be in your tap water and in some of the foods you eat. Before you engage in a heavy metal toxicity detox program you must find the root of the cause. There is no point in following a protocol if you are going to continue exposing your body to arsenic compounds.

You may start by eliminating major sources of heavy metals. These include big fatty fish, conventional meats, high smoking environments and furniture materials that may indicate improper treatment.

Sulfur-containing compounds

One of the most common sulfur-containing natural compounds is garlic. Aside from being an excellent natural antibiotic, garlic is argued to have many metal-chelating properties and may even work to prevent the damage that heavy metals can cause to the body in the first place.

Additionally, supplements containing glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and/or N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) provide these sulfur compounds that can help bind with the toxins and contribute to the body’s natural detox programs.

Chelation therapy

For acute poisoning cases, patients have undergone chelation therapy to remove toxic metals including arsenic. Chelation works by supplying a solution that will bind the toxins in the bloodstream and remove them from the body. This treatment must be performed by a trained health professional.

Some of the common chelators used include dimercaprol (BAL), DMPS and succimer (DMSA). BAL is supplied through an intramuscular injection for a period of 5 to 10 days several times a day. DMPS and DMSA are supplied as oral medication for a period of up to 14 days altering the dosage depending on the patient. These methods are quite aggressive on the body and may produce side effects including vomiting, watery eyes, metallic taste and rashes among others.

Gastrointestinal cleaning

For emergency and life-threating cases, gastrointestinal cleaning practices including a gastric flush-out or induced vomiting have been performed in the past. While these are not often recommended, they may help in the removal of arsenic from the body after a strong recent exposure.

Since heavy metals can remain in the hair and the nails it is still recommended to follow other arsenic removal protocols that are gentler on the body; as well as, taking proper hair mineral analysis testing if the symptoms persist.
