Relieving leg cramps during pregnancy

The best way to relieve a leg cramp during pregnancy is to immediately stretch the calf muscles. To do that, lay your leg straight, heel and then gently flex the toes back towards your body. It may be painful at first, but this process will ease out your spasm, and your pain will go away in a minute.

You may also relax a cramp by massaging your calf muscle, or warming it with the help of a hot water bottle. If possible, try to walk about for a couple of minutes, until the pain goes away completely.

In order to prevent it from happening at all, you should not stand or sit with crossed legs for long, stretch the calf muscles frequently during the day, and a few times before going to bed as well, walking everyday, not getting too tired, and drinking lots of water.

Relieving stomach cramps during pregnancy

Stomach cramps during early pregnancy often feel like period pains, and are perfectly normal to have. Whenever you get a stomach cramp, try to relax in a warm water bath, and do some mild exercise like swimming or walking. Get a hot water bottle, place it on your painful region, and curl up on a sofa. You may also ask someone to give you a gentle rub on the lower back. You will definitely feel a lot better than before.

What to do if the cramp becomes intolerable

If you frequently have cramps during pregnancy you need to contact a doctor immediately, especially if the pain is constant and not like any other occasional cramp. Severe cramp may also indicate ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, preterm labor, placental abruption or any other serious problem. If you see redness, tenderness or swelling in your muscle, or if you feel heat when you touch the area, then they may indicate a blood clot, and you may need immediate medical intervention. Blood clotting is rare, but is more likely to happen during pregnancy.
