How to heal an appendicitis wound

Currently acute appendicitis is operated on by laparoscopic technique, this means that you will see on your belly three wounds, one of about 4 or 5 staples or stitches on the the lateral right side. Two stitches or staples in the navel and 1 stitch below the navel. Here we explain how to care and heal these wounds which are a result of an appendectomy.

Steps to follow:


In any case you should follow the indications given by your doctor to know how to treat appendicitis. Right after surgery wounds are tender and what should be done is to cover them with gauze, if drainage is necessary the bandaging will be more important.


About eight hours after the end the operation the dressing can be removed for the wounds to dry.


Wound healing treatments should take place two or three times a day with soap and water, dry well and cover with only a single gauze (sometimes am abdominal bandage is not good as it usually encloses a lot of moisture and can promote or worsen an infection).


The more body fat you have, the more time should be spent on healing. Also, you should be taking prescribed antibiotics at the right times and during the scheduled days.


Food is important to help heal the appendicitis wounds as soon as possible. During the first days you must eat liquid or semi-liquid foods, it is important that the food goes down well and the patient has no vomiting. The wounds resulting from a laparoscopy should be healed within 7-10 days after the operation, then you can go to your doctor to remove the stitches or staples.
