Glycemia is the glucose that circulates in the bloodstream. For the proper functioning of the body and a balanced health condition it is required that these levels be stable. Its value is extracted from a blood sample which can be collected from a small puncture in the fingertip of the hand or directly with venous / analytical access. This is usually measured in fasting conditions and its value is measured mg / dL. In OneHowTo.com we explain what are normal blood glucose levels for non diabetics.

Normoglycemia

Normoglicemia is the term given to the parameters which, following a glucose measurement, are between normal figures. Normal blood glucose values in a test should be between 60 and 110 mg / dL. Figures below 60 or above 110 mg / dL respond to problems related to hypoglycaemia or perhaps diabetes mellitus.

Even though, these levels can vary depending on the time of the day. Before meals, it is usually between 60 and 90 mg/dL.

Hyperglycaemia

Hyperglycaemia is the name given to the condition where blood glucose values obtained on an empty stomach exceed the amount of 110 mg / dL. For the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus there are different forms of detection:

  • When blood glucose parameters are at or above 126 mg / dL (7mm / mol) in two tests of blood glucose at different times.
  • When a random glucose level result is greater than 200mg / dL (11.11mm / mol) and with hyperglycaemia associated symptoms (thirst, blurred vision, weakness, feeling of needing to urinate constantly,...).
  • When after two hours of the oral glucose tolerance test there are figures equal to or greater than 200 mg / dl (11.11 mm / mol) and this occurs at least twice in a year.

Hypoglycaemia

Hypoglycaemia is defined as the low value of blood glucose levels. Unlike hyperglycaemia, which is more discreet and silent in terms of symptoms, hypoglycaemia can be asymptomatic although most often this is expressed by double vision, sweating, tremors, fast or pounding heartbeat, dizziness,... For its detection, glucose measurement is required, the results will indicate values less than 60mg / dl. If not detected early enough sufferers can become unconsciousness and even die.

Recommendations according to levels of glucose

In case of normoglycemia you must insist on having a correct diet, avoiding a sedentary life, keeping the body hydrated and, above all, carry out controls or annual check ups to check blood glucose is normal.

For patients who are diagnosed with diabetes it is advised they follow a low or no carbohydrate and sugar diet, that they exercise, control glucose levels according to their normal values. Adjust with your nurse when you should control your blood glucose level.

In cases of patients who tend to have hypoglycemia (commonly insulin-dependent diabetics), it is advisable to always have on hand sugar sachets to ingest orally. If the person loses consciousness and hypoglycemia is evidenced a subcutaneously injection filled with glucagon administered (all diabetic patients treated with insulin should have one in their fridge).
