Hypothyroidism is a disease characterised by low activity of the thyroid gland . This underactive gland occurs due to inflammation of the same, leading to damaged cells. Treatment of hypothyroidism is important since the thyroid gland is responsible for secreting hormones that control metabolism. Patients with hypothyroidism are advised to eat food with a high iodine content. This is explained because iodine is the most effective way to increase production of the thyroxin component, which increases the activity of the thyroid gland.
These high iodine foods are advised: Fresh fruits such as apples, strawberries, pineapple, mango and apricots; dried fruits and nuts such as dates, hazelnuts, pistachios and almonds; vegetables and legumes such as peas, tomatoes, beans, lentils; and seafood.
The following foods are not advised because of their ability to decrease the production of thyroxin. These are foods that inhibit the absorption of iodine like cabbage, radish and Brussels sprouts.
There are some fruits and vegetables that you should not eat a lot of: Oranges, lemons, figs, plums, peaches, peanuts, carrots, celery, squash, aubergine...
