The health of our baby is what is most important to us, we want to ensure that it is always healthy and happy. However a change of climate in the environment, the spread of a virus or bacteria or conditions such as teething can affect our baby's temperature making it suffer from fever. But what is the normal temperature of a baby and how do you know when it has a fever?

What is the normal temperature for a baby

Different societies and academies of pediatrics have different values to determine what the normal temperature of a baby is. However, most agree that it should be between 36 ºC and 37.5 ºC (96.8ºF and 99.5ºF) and can reach up to 38 °C (100.4ºF)with no cause for alarm.

Clearly, if your baby exceeds that temperature and it remains elevated for several hours or increases further it is important to consult your pediatrician. But in what cases must you go to the doctor?

You should visit the doctor if your baby's temperature...

  • Is higher than 38 ºC (100.4ºF) and your baby is under 3 months.
  • Is over 39 °C (102.2ºF) in infants older than 3 months.
  • If fever persists for 24 hours or more.
  • If you observe other symptoms such as breathing difficulties, drowsiness, apathy, skin rashes, vomiting o diarrhea.
