What Fabrics Make you Sweat more

What Fabrics Make you Sweat more

When summers strike, we all tend to sweat. Some people sweat a little more than others, but that’s fine. Actually, sweat is a good thing to happen, as it opens up your pores and releases toxins out. But sweating at the wrong times can make things worse and even embarrass you. You would not want those sweat patches at a dinner party, at a date or on your way to work. Everyone would be quickly able to notice your underarm, under-thigh and under the breasts sweat pools. After reading this oneHOWTO article, you will be able to understand that you can actually control your sweating by avoiding wearing certain fabrics. Here, we will let you know what fabrics make you sweat more, so that you can design your summer wardrobe accordingly.

Rayon

Rayon is a man-made fiber created by chemically extracting cellulose from trees. As compared to cotton, it has a weaker strength, due to which it is commonly used to manufacture light weight, delicate clothes. Although this fabric is known to be breezy and light, it repels water rather than absorbing it. Like any other synthetic fiber, it does not absorb your sweat, allowing your sweat to accumulate under the clothing, and lead to ultimate irritation and discomfort. So, it is best to avoid rayon at all times during summer if you don't want to end up with an ugly sweat patch.

Many summer dresses and short-sleeved shirts are made out of this fabric to cut the cost of creating them out of cotton.

Denim

Avoid wearing your favorite tight-fitting denim jeans in the heat of summer. Denim is a heavy-weight fabric that does not give much space to your skin. It constricts your skin inside, and does not let it breathe. Wearing a denim fabric in the summer will be a perfect recipe to increase your sweat and feel unpleasant from within. So, try avoiding it as well.

Polyester

Polyester is a perfect fabric for winter wear, perhaps due to its durability and high resistance to stretch, mildew, abrasion and chemicals. But as far as using polyester and polyester blends in summers is concerned, they are a big no no; this will make you sweat like hell. This fabric is water resistant, due to which it does not absorb sweat and let it accumulate near your skin. There are polyester fabrics blended together with some natural fibers, but they are of no good either. In such blends, natural fibers tend to hide and the leading fiber still remains the polyester. No blend has more than 40% of natural fiber, which means that it is also water repellent and does not make the situation any better.

Cotton & spandex mix

Finding both cotton and spandex labeled in leggings is common, but if you wear them in summer, you will be forced to sit in your own pool of sweat. Cotton is a great moisture wicking fabric, and it is immensely preferred to be worn during summers. But when combined with spandex, the all-time favorite cotton fabric becomes heavier in weight and leads to skin suffocation. Those leggings may be fine to wear during winter months, but may not be a good choice to be worn in summer or for exercise either.

Silk

Although silk is a natural fiber, it also has the property to repel water instead of absorbing it. When you wear a silk shirt, your skin may become unpleasantly wet, irritated and moist. You must have noticed those rough, discolored patches on the underarm areas of your silk clothes. This is because silk ripples when held against water, and becomes rough when it dries. Silk also has a great property to retain your body odor. So, you should avoid silk at all costs in summer.

Nylon

Nylon is a 100% synthetic fiber, which is widely used for manufacturing workout clothes and stockings. This is because it is extremely flexible and elastic, but exposing your skin to it can lead to excessive chaffing while you sweat. Nylon can be a good fabric to wear while swimming, because it is water resistant and has a low absorbency rate. But at other times, you should always avoid wearing nylon clothes during summer.

What to wear to avoid sweating

If you have hyperhidrosis or are prone to sweating, then there are certain fabrics that will suit you best than those mentioned above. Let's take a look at the alternatives:

Linen

This magical natural fabric is the best to avoid sweating as it shapes better on your body, leaves room for the skin to breathe and will thus avoid sweaty patch. You can also go for a cotton and linen mixture if what you're looking for is formal attire.

100% combed cotton

As we've explained, cotton is an all-natural fabric that helps our skin breathe. Combing cotton is a process that combs cotton fibers in the same direction in order to improve its strength and durability. This type of cotton is a great material to avoid sweat as it's softer and will help avoid perspiration.

Bamboo

You may not have ever heard of a bamboo t-shirt, though it's a great option for people with sensitive skin: it's hypoallergenic, breathable and absorbent. They are also great for UV protection and will cover up any odor if you do manage to sweat in a bamboo shirt.

Apart from wearing appropriate clothes, there are also other tips you can use to avoid sweating too much, as what you eat, drink and the way you live can influence the amount of sweat you produce.
