Streptococci bacteria are everywhere, and they are many times present on our skin and in the throat. But they do not always lead to strep throat. In fact, the bacterium is infectious, and is passed around by just coughing, sneezing and cold viruses. Someone with the infection may have his saliva or mucus on his hand, and pass it on to you through a hand shake or other physical contact. Teenagers and students are the most common victims of strep throat, because they study in classrooms which may have infected people. If you have recently been to a hospital, you have a higher risk of catching the infection too.

If you have pain in your throat, how would you identify whether it is strep throat, or just throat soreness. In addition to fever, chills, sweating, headache, high pulse, nausea, vomiting and swollen tonsils, you may also experience white and red patches in the throat, swollen and tender glands on the sides of your neck, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, skin rash, enlarged red tonsils and stomach pain. All these symptoms indicate that you have strep throat.

Treatment methods

If you have been diagnosed with the condition of strep throat, then your doctor will give you antibiotics for treating the infection. These drugs will inhibit the spread of the bacteria, thus relieving your condition. Some common and most effective strep throat antibiotics are amoxicillin and penicillin. It is important to finish the complete course of the treatment, as even if your symptoms have improved, the symptoms may return if you do not kill the infection completely.

Preventing strep throat

Avoid physical contact with infected people. If you are studying in the same classroom, you can ask the infected person to not attend the classes until at least 48 hours after treatment. Also do not use any infected person’s things, as his or her saliva or mucus on it may enter your body and infect you.
