What are the Symptoms of Inguinal Hernia

An inguinal hernia occurs when perforations in the abdominal wall cause part of the abdominal viscera to come out, causing a bulge that is known as hernia. In many cases it can occur without many obvious symptoms, although it will be possible to feel the lump caused by this condition, making it very easy to diagnose. It is a more common condition in men than in women and the only treatment is to surgically remove the hernia. At OneHowTo.com we explain what the symptoms of inguinal hernias are and give some details about this condition.

There are two types of inguinal hernia, depending on what causes them:

  • Indirect inguinal hernia: this is the most common and occurs often from birth. It usually forms in the inguinal gap that men have in their groin area and that allows the passage of blood vessels to the testes and seminal duct. In cases in which this gap is very large, an inguinal hernia may form, which is why this condition is more common in males.
  • Direct inguinal hernia: Occurs when the hole that leads to the exit of the viscera is formed artificially in an area of thin and delicate abdominal wall. It can happen if you carry too much weight, if you have a strong and frequent cough and even because of excessive straining to pass a bowel movement.

Symptoms of inguinal hernias are not always presented clearly, and sometimes the patient may not detect the lump or not have discomfort at first. However there are clear signs that should be taken into account:

  • Presence of an abdominal bulge that expands when we apply force or cough. The bulge is most noticeable when we stand, and it gets smaller when we lie down.
  • The bulge is easily palpable and goes in when pressed.
  • Sometimes inguinal hernias can cause throbbing pain in the testes in the case of men, or in the area of the vaginal lips in women. This pain usually comes and goes.

If you suspect an inguinal hernia the recommendation is that you consult a specialist for examination. This condition can only be corrected by surgery, but only a doctor can determine the type of procedure or the need to do so.
