The narrowing of the arteries occurs gradually and by an accumulation of plaque, normally caused by fat and various substances that make it difficult for blood and oxygen to pass to the heart, to the point that it stops completely.

There are several risk factors that increase the possibility of suffering with CHD among them are:

  • Eating a diet full of foods high in fat and cholesterol. Eating an unbalanced diet.
  • Smoking.
  • Having problems with high blood pressure or cholesterol and elevated triglycerides.
  • Being sedentary and not physically active on a regular basis.
  • Drinking alcohol excessively.
  • Having an immediate family member who has suffered from coronary heart disease.
  • Being male because men are more prone to this disease.
  • Being in a highly stressful environment and generating a lot of tension.

In the initial stages of the disease signs may not occur, however once the arteries become narrower it is common to see some symptoms of CHD that it is important to pay attention to. These are:

  • Pain or discomfort in the chest occurring especially with physical activity or strong emotion, but that may disappear when resting.
  • Chest pressure in the heart area, which can also occur in other areas such as the arm, neck or breastbone.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Fatigue during activities.
  • In some cases weakness.

If you show any of these symptoms it is important to visit a cardiologist as soon as possible for a detailed review, especially if you are in the CHD risk group.
