Leukemia - a type of cancer affecting the blood - occurs when abnormal white blood cells proliferate in the bone marrow, accumulating in the bone marrow and in the blood.

Leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer, but can also occur in adulthood. It has certain telltale signs and symptoms that should alert us to the need to visit a specialist, so we at OneHowTo explain what the symptoms of leukaemia are.

Steps to follow:
1

There are four types of leukemia, and although they all have similar symptoms and treatments, the outcomes can vary in each.

  • Acute lymphoctic leukemia is characterized by the increased white blood cells of the lymphocytes cell type.
  • Acute myelogenous leukemia: in this case the increase in white blood cells is due to a greater presence of myelocytes.
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is also characterised by an increase in lymphocytes, this being the most common type of leukemia in adults.
  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia: In this type of cancer there is an increase in the presence of abnormal neutrophil granulocytes in the blood.
2

The most common symptoms of leukemia are:

  • Fatigue and tiredness, normally caused by low platelets.
  • Loss of appetite and/or sudden weight loss.
  • Sporadic and unexplained fever.
  • Bruising without reason.
  • Heavy bleeding and bleeding more easily than normal in the mouth, nose or rectum. Having any wound or injury that bleeds abundantly.
  • Bone and stomach pain.
  • Anaemia.
  • Painless lumps in areas like the armpits, neck, groin or stomach.
  • Bloating and pain under the ribs.

In most cases not all the signs mentioned above will always occur, because symptoms can vary depending on the type and stage of the disease.

3

The symptoms of leukemia can also easily be confused with signs of various diseases and conditions, many of them easily curable such as anaemia. So don't panic even if you are experiencing one or more of the above symptoms.

However, the fact that you are experiencing the symptoms at all indicates that something is wrong with our health and it is important to visit a doctor.

4

If you suspect you may have leukemia, see your doctor. A blood test will give the first clues as to the origin of the symptoms. In the event that the specialist considers it appropriate, further analysis of bone marrow is necessary for a definitive diagnosis.
