Medicinal properties

Turmeric not only serves as a spice for cooking, but also has medicinal properties. Since ancient times it has been used to relieve discomfort especially gastrointestinal discomfort. It is also known as an antiseptic for wounds and burns.

Scientists have found a compound in turmeric called curcumin which is largely responsible for the health benefits. This compound has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Curcumin

Curcumin gives turmeric its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as for anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin is popular among people suffering from joint pain or who have arthritis. It is also recommended for athletes because it helps keep joints in good condition preventing swelling.

It also has other important properties like being anti-carcinogenic. Likewise, curcumin also helps brain function by protecting neurons. Hopefully it can help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Another benefit is that it has anti-clotting properties, having the ability to help thin the blood, reducing the oxygenation of plaque in the artery walls. Therefore it is also beneficial for people with high blood pressure or high cholesterol, protecting against heart attacks and strokes.

Using turmeric for its benefits

If you would like to use turmeric as a dietary supplement, make an appointment with your doctor who will guide you as to the dosage. You can find it in 400mg doses at the herbalist's shop to take two or three times daily with meals. If the supplement contains 1000mg of turmeric extract you should only take it once a day.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or are taking any medication consult your doctor if you want to use turmeric as a supplement or before taking any supplement because it can negatively affect you and your baby.

If you have had kidney problems like kidney stones or bile duct obstruction, you should not take turmeric because it can slow blood clotting, but in any case, do not forget to go to your doctor for advice.
