The Best Home Remedies for Constipation

If you have constipation problems, you should get used to having orange juice and a couple of kiwis every morning on an empty stomach. This will stimulate bile discharge, refresh the intestines and provide you with fibre.

Ideal breakfast to combat constipation

Porridge is a breakfast that will help you relieve your constipation. Oats are high in fibre and also help us defecate apart from being good for lowering cholesterol.

Ingredients: oats (if possible fine and organic), water, 1 lemon, raisins. Optional: honey, sesame seeds and dried apricots.


  • Put a cup of oatmeal in a saucepan with four cups of cold water, a lemon peel and a handful of raisins.
  • Heat until it boils. Let the mixture boil for a few minutes while you stir occasionally until it's thickened (about 3 or 4 minutes)
  • Put the mixture in a dish or bowl and get ready to eat!
  • If you want you can add honey to sweeten it. You can also throw in some sesame seeds and chopped dried apricots for a touch of flavor and color.

This breakfast is a very effective natural remedy to treat constipation. You can take it whenever you want and combine it with orange juice and kiwi.

Follow a routine for going to the loo

If you have trouble going to the loo because you have constipation problems, you should get used to following a routine:

  • Try to go to the toilet every day at the same time (preferably after breakfast or lunch)
  • Adopt a suitable posture for defecation. Sit on the toilet leaning slightly forward and lift up your legs a little (you can use a footrest for help).
  • Relax yourself to breathe and open your bowels.
  • Do abdominal and breathing exercises: while opening the lungs inhale and push as you exhale. Use the diaphragm to push the stool in a natural way while the sphincters open.

Add foods with fibre to your diet

If you have trouble going to the loo, it is very important that you add foods containing fibre to your diet, especially those with high inulin. Foods like whole foods, vegetables, fruits and specifically foods such as flaxseed, oat bran and wheat, psyllium seeds, soaked prunes, spinach, sprouted wheat bread, etc.

Abdominal massages

You can give yourself an abdominal massage by circling the area clockwise. If you are pregnant or have a very acute constipation, do not try these massages.

Consult your doctor
