Lorazepam is a psychotropic medication which is indicated to treat cases of excessive anxiety, anxiolytic neurosis, psychological stress and insomnia and hyper-emotiveness - but it's always given to patients who need this drug in the short term. It is vital to start taking this medicine if you have been prescribed the medicine by a doctor and in any case opt for self-medication, as it may not be compatible with your medical history and it could cause potential adverse effects. In the following OneHowTo article we explain how to take Lorazepam 1 mg tablets in explicit detail.

Steps to follow:
1

The first thing worth noting is that you should NOT take Lorazepam 1 mg tablets if you are in any of the following situations:

  • If you have an allergy after taking a benzodiazepine or any of the components of Lorazepam.
  • Myasthenia gravis, i.e., muscle weakness and fatigue.
  • Respiratory insufficiency.
  • Sleep apnea, i.e. interrupted breathing while sleeping.
  • Severe hepatic impairment.
  • Lorazepam consumption in children is not recommended except when absolutely necessary.
  • It is not recommended for pregnant women nor for women during lactation.
2

If the doctor has prescribed Lorazepam, it is important to follow all the instructions carefully in terms of doses and of duration of treatment, as they tend to be varied depending on each patient. Also, if you are in doubt go back to your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.

3

For patients with states of anxiety, it is usual to take half a tablet (0.5 mg) of Lorazepam 1 mg tablets 2 to 3 times a day. Administer the drug orally together with some water. The duration of treatment usually does not exceed 8-12 weeks, but this is a fact that the doctor who treated you should consider and it will be decided upon when you are examined. Depending on the evolution of the patient, the specialist will evaluate whether to increase or decrease the dose or, on the contrary, if the drug should be withdrawn gradually.

4

Patients with sleeping disorders as insomnia are usually prescribed a dose of Lorazepam 1 tablet of 1 mg daily. The tablet should be taken just before bedtime. However, elderly patients and people with kidney or liver failure are recommended to take a half tablet daily. Remember that this dose may be adjusted by the doctor depending on each patient.

5

If you believe that the Lorazepam dose that the doctor has prescribed is too strong or, conversely, very weak you should consult your doctor.

6

Note that if at any time during treatment you forget to take Lorazepam, take the tablet as soon as you remember but never ingest a double dose.
