How to Take Licorice

Licorice has many medicinal benefits for the human body but how do you take it? The truth is that many people are not completely sure about the most appropriate method to take full advantage of the properties of this plant and thus treat various conditions.

The best thing will always be to consult your doctor so he/she can advise you about whether you can start a treatment with licorice, especially if you suffer from any illness or chronic health problem. If your doctor has given you approval, you'll find out how to take licorice in this OneHowTo article.

Steps to follow:
1

One of the most traditional and common ways to ingest licorice is by chewing or sucking the root of this plant, as this is the part that is used to exploit the many medicinal uses and properties of licorice.

This plant grows in wetlands and after harvesting the roots are washed to so you can keep them for a long time. Although some people directly take liquorice straight from the earth, you'll also find it in natural shops and herbalists.

Furthermore, to combat numerous diseases such as diseases of the gastrointestinal system or healing wounds, it is also possible to drink a licorice tea. To do this, you will need to differentiate between its internal or external use, as the amounts used vary:

  • Internal use, i.e. drinking: decoction of 20g dried licorice root per litre of water.
  • External use, i.e. application on the skin: boil 50g licorice in each litre of water.

Many different supplements and natural products are made from licorice extract to combat various diseases. A good example is liquorice tablets used to treat hoarseness, cough or other respiratory and throat problems.

Such preparations are also available for purchase in natural stores as well as in certain pharmacies or chemists.

Another way to take liquorice is a licorice tincture obtained from macerating the roots of this herb in alcohol, to avail its active ingredient. About 40 drops (2ml) licorice dissolved in water or juice is recommended, and it is possible to dilute the licorice tincture in hot water to apply it to the skin with the help of gauze or compresses.
