When we talk about summer, the most dreaded thing that comes across the mind is those hot sleepless nights when we keep waking up again and again due to excessive heat and discomfort. Air conditioning is an obvious solution to this, but most units are expensive, inefficient, and contribute to your utility bills largely. Instead of silk, satin or polyester sheets, choose light colored cotton linens for your bed during summers. These are breathable fabrics that excellently promote air flow and ventilation on hot summer nights.
Buy yourself a hot water bottle. You can fill it with hot water in winters and get a hot massage, and keep it in the freezer and use it as a cool ice pack before bed during summers.
Before going to bed, dampen a towel or sheet in cold water, and swirl it in the washing machine to let any excess dripping water go out. Wear it as a blanket and keep cool.
Wear as less clothes as possible during summer nights. If that’s not possible, pick a soft, loose cotton shirt and shorts instead of tight night suits.
Make an air conditioner of your own by keeping a shallow bowl or pan full of ice cubes in front of a fan. The air from the fan will pick up cool water from the ice surface, and create a cool mist around it.
Pampering your pulses will cool you down instantly. Take an ice pack or a cold compress, and apply at your pulse points, such as your wrists, elbows, neck, ankles, behind the knees etc.
Try to sleep alone on summer nights. Cuddling with someone, even if he or she is your spouse, can increase body heat, and make your bed a pit of sweat and humidity.
Drink a glass of water before going to bed. Tossing, turning and sweating in summer nights can cause dehydration, which can add to your discomfort.
Take a cool shower before going to bed. This will bring your core body temperature down, and rinse off any layer of sweat from your body. You will feel fresh, clean and cold after a shower, and you will sleep easy during the night.
The higher you go, the hotter you will feel. So, if you are living in a multi-storey house, try to sleep on the ground floor, or better in the basement. If you have only one floor, try to come down to floor from your bed.
Try to turn off all the lights, and bring down all the shades in the house to keep the area cool. Even if it is dark outside, hot air may enter from the windows, and make your home hot.
Hang a curtain dipped in cold water on your windows. When hot air comes inside, the cold curtain will turn it into cool breeze, which will help through the night.
