How to Reduce Blood Glucose Levels
Hyperglycaemia occurs when blood glucose levels are too high. High levels of glucose can cause an accumulation of toxic acids in the blood, dry mouth, weakness and even comas. Often this is experienced by people with diabetes so proper management of blood glucose levels is essential to your health. Hyperglycaemia can be deterred through proper diet, exercise and regular blood glucose level controls.
Check your blood glucose level with a glucometer. Your pre-prandial (before a meal) reading should be between 90 and 130 milligrams per decilitre (mg / dl.) Your postprandial (after a meal) level should not exceed 140 mg/dl. Hyperglycaemia is medically defined as a glucose reading greater than 180 milligrams per decilitre.
Restrict and reduce sugar consumption. This means both fruit sugars and refined simple sugars. Your body converts simple sugars into glucose very quickly during digestion. This causes a massive and rapid increase of blood glucose levels .
Eat smaller meals throughout the day. You can raise your level of post-prandial glucose simply by eating less food. You may need to eat smaller quantities of food in every meal but more frequently. Diabetics are often advised to limit starches as they quickly turn into glucose in the blood.
Exercise more often. Naturally, you can lower your blood sugar levels by doing some exercise like zumba, walking, running, swim or biking. These activities make your body burn calories, which in turn causes the body to use the available glucose in the blood as an energy source.
Increase your fibre intake. Fibre is a form of carbohydrate, but doesn't cause a sharp rise in blood glucose levels. 50 grams of fibre a day is recommended for most diabetics, and this can easily be consumed with vegetables, whole grain pasta and brown rice.
