Saline solution is one of the best friends you can have in fighting nasal congestion easily using a home remedy. Whilst you can get hold of a pre-made saline solution in a pharmacy, it's just as easy to make one at home. To do this you will need:

  • 1 cup of of drinking water - preferably bottled
  • ½ a teaspoonful of salt
  • a pinch of bicarbonate of soda
  • a container with a spray or dropper

Simmer the water in a small saucepan. This will make it easier to mix in other ingredients and remove any impurities that may have come into contact with the water. Add sodium bicarbonate, non-iodized sea salt and honey.

Mix all the ingredients until they are completely dissolved in the water. Manuka honey is not required for the nasal spray, but it may be helpful because of its antibacterial properties.

Now you are ready to use your saline solution to relieve your blocked nose. If you have a container with a spray mechanism on you can simply spray the solution into your nasal cavities. If its a dropper, lean over a since and put a few drops in each nostril while tilting your head to one side.
