As mentioned, Ayurvedic medicine differentiates 3 types of bodies with different characteristics that therefore require different nutrients and energies. These doshas are:


  • Slight build and thin
  • They have an irregular appetite: they may be very hungry or not depending on the moment
  • Light sleep, with bouts of insomnia
  • They are people with a lot of imagination and vitality
  • They have a great ability to grasp new information but their memories are fragile
  • They tend to worry and go over things again and again
  • They use the toilet irregularly and are prone to constipation


  • They have a medium physique and are of a medium size
  • This is an enterprising person who likes challenges
  • They are hungry and thirsty throughout the day
  • They usually have blond, light brown or reddish hair
  • These people are easily stressed and irritated
  • They do not like the heat


  • They have a strong and wide body
  • They have a calm personality and don't get angry easily
  • Their skin is usually oily and smooth
  • They sleep soundly
  • They gain weight easily
  • Digestion of food is slow for them
  • There are not very hungry throughout the day
  • They are tolerant people and know how to forgive
  • They tend to be complacent and possessive

Once we have determined what type of dosha is most suited to our physical and emotional characteristics, we need to know what foods are recommended for our dosha. The Ayurvedic diet does not prohibit any food, it focuses on a healthy lifestyle low fatty foods.

The following list is a reference of the foods that should dominate your diet according to your body type, but you only need to use them as a base: a balanced diet is the foundation of ayurveda.

  • Vata: people with this dosha should eat a lot of dairy products, low-fat proteins (chicken and turkey), fish and fruit. Of all the spices, coriander and thyme are best suited to your dishes. It is recommended that you cook all your food and eat it warm to fit the needs of your body.
  • Pitta: the type of food recommended for these people are raw foods eaten cold, slightly spiced and with sweet, bitter and astringent flavors (below we discuss the 6 flavors of Ayurveda). Asparagus, broccoli, leafy green vegetables, soybeans and chickpeas are highly recommended for this body type.
  • Kapha: foods that work best with these bodies are lighter foods that are warm and spicy. The ideal flavors are bitter and astringent. These people should have a diet rich in vegetables and that is free of dairy and salt. Ginger, lentils, eggplant, potatoes and lettuce are highly recommended for this dosha.

Remember that to lose weight with Ayurveda, it is recommended that you eat these foods in greater quantities than others, but do not limit your diet to just these because that would be a poor diet lacking nutrients. The only premise of this diet is that you leave out saturated fats and cook food lightly.


In the previous point we discussed the recommended flavors according to your dosha. By this we mean that this gives a lot of importance to 6 flavors: sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter and astringent. For nutritional balance it is important that your day includes all 6 flavors because the combination of all of them will reduce your desire for sweets, reduce hunger and get your metabolism working properly.

According to ayurveda, cravings or gluttony are caused when you don?t have all 6 tastes in your diet and your body wants you to meet its needs.   • Acid: foods such as tomatoes, grapes, vinegar, lemon, yogurt, raspberries, etc.
  • Bitter: lettuce, spinach, eggplant or saffron.
  • Astringent: cauliflower, potatoes, pears, apples and lentils.
  • Sweet: rice, melons, coconut, banana, watermelon, honey, bread, fennel and almonds.
  • Spicy: garlic, onion, basil, ginger, bay leaf, rosemary, thyme, cloves, mustard or horseradish.
  • Salty: zinc, magnesium and salt.
