Foods to avoid to prevent heartburn

Before you start looking to cure heartburn, it's first best to try and prevent it all altogether. So for our first home remedy to prevent heartburn, avoid foods that cause heartburn. Foods that cause heartburn are as follows:

  • Chocolate
  • Very fatty and very spicy foods
  • Mint
  • Tomato, raw onion and garlic
  • Pepper and vinegar

Aloe vera for heartburn

Drink 30 to 40 milliliters of aloe Vera juice every day (it's better to go for the readily prepared juice sold in shops instead of taking it directly from the plant). Aloe Vera normalizes stomach pH levels and reduces stomach acid, improving the balance of gut flora.

Other things we can do to prevent heartburn

Apart from avoiding the foods mentioned in the first section and trying the home remedies explained above, there are other things you can do to prevent heartburn:

  • Eating food in small quantities, so that you don't feel like your stomach is full.
  • Don't go to sleep until at least two hours after eating. Try to have dinner an hour earlier if you want to go to bed early.
  • When you go to bed, keep the top part of your body (from the waist up) slightly raised. You can buy prop-up wedges in shops for this very purpose.
  • Try not to do exercise just after eating. Wait for food to digest before exercising.
  • Avoid wearing clothes that are very tight around your stomach, as this can cause pressure.
  • Try to eat and chew slowly.
  • Try not to drink water during your meal. It's better to drink before or after.
