How To Cure Sinusitis With Home Remedies

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the membrane that lines the nasal passages. It can cause pain and inflammation in the area, with nasal blockage, a headache and, in some cases, fever. As is the case with any other disease, it's necessary to visit your physician who will prescribe treatment. However, there are also a number of natural sinusitis remedies that'll relieve the symptoms and help you improve. At OneHowTo.com we'll tell you how to cure sinusitis with home remedies.

Eucalyptus vapour

Breathing eucalyptus vapour is an effective way to reduce inflammation of the sinus passages and helps in the cleansing of the mucous. To do this, put water in a pot and add a few eucalyptus leaves or some drops of eucalyptus oil. Then heat until it begins to steam and with a towel over your head, create a sauna effect, and breathe in the vapours. This is a great way to clear mucus in the nasal passages.

Infusion of ginger, eucalyptus, lemon and honey

Another way to cure sinusitis with home remedies consists of an infusion made with a base of grated ginger, eucalyptus leaves, lemon juice and honey. Boil the grated ginger and eucalyptus leaves in a pint of water for approximately 15 minutes. Then, remove it and add lemon juice and some spoonfuls of honey. If you drink it daily, you'll notice a huge improvement.

Verbena poultice

Verbena is a plant with great decongestant powers, making it very helpful at relieving the symptoms of sinusitis. To make the poultice, put 30 ml of verbena in a frying pan and heat until you begin to smell it, then add 30 ml of olive oil and two scrambled egg whites. As it emulsifies, put it in gauze or a piece of cloth and carefully -because it tends to be very watery- apply it in the nasal passages and leave there for 10 minutes.

Nasal rinse with salt water

Another home remedy that's very effective is a nasal rinse with salt water. It consists of a container sold in herbalists or pharmacies that contains sea salt and water to be directly applied to the nasal passages. The salt water goes in one nostril and out the other, helping to clear out the nasal passages. Use this rinse in both nostrils and repeat twice a day. You can also do this with salt water vapour (or using water with salt instead), as explained above with the eucalyptus vapour.

Decongestive foods

A healthy, balanced diet is always necessary to improve your health. But, at the same time, there are some foods that you should eat for sinusitis and that will help counteract the symptoms, such as garlic and onion, both containing decongestive and antiinflammatory properties. It's also recommended to eat carrots , because they contain carotene and are responsible for strengthening the mucous membranes and increasing the body's natural defences.
