However, lean meat is recommended, which provides a lower amount of fat for the body and is therefore considered more appropriate to maintain cardiovascular health. Lean cuts of red meat include sirloin, top round steak, eye of round steak and bottom round steak. Excessive consumption of fattier cuts, as well as meat derivatives should be avoided, as they contain a high fat content.
Recommended amount of red meat per week

Why is it important not to overconsume red meat?
A recent publication by the World Health Organisation has warned that processed meats increase the risk of cancer, which includes processed meat products like prepared hamburgers and meatballs, products containing ground beef, corned beef, canned products and a long list of sausages from both red meat and pork.
Additionally, research points to the possibility that red meat is "probably carcinogenic to humans", although the research is inconclusive. The quality of the meat chosen is important, as is the number of times per week that it's consumed. In addition, preparation of meat comes into play because burned foods may increase cancer risk, so eating grilled or barbecued meat often could be harmful.
Apart from this, excessive consumption of meat increases the chance of developing other health conditions such as:
- High cholesterol and triglycerides.
- High uric acid.
- Increased risk of heart disease.
