Ear infections can happen for several reasons, the most common include: otitis media, the build-up of water in the ear that has not drained out properly, complications arising from nasal or respiratory infections spreading to the ear or the presence of external agents that create the problem.

The most common symptoms of this condition are:

  • Earache
  • Redness in the area
  • Slight hearing loss
  • Pus leaking the ear
  • In some cases it may also cause fever, dizziness and unsteadiness

Home remedies for ear infections can help to both reduce the infection and to relieve the inflammation caused by this problem.

To clear up the infection, tea tree oil is an excellent solution because of its antiseptic power. To apply, warm the tea tree oil and make sure that is not hot enough to burn you before applying three drops to the affected ear using a dropper. Repeat this three times a day and you'll feel the improvement.

Garlic is another natural product known for its high antibiotic and anti-inflammatory powers, making it an excellent remedy to naturally treat ear infections. The best way to make a garlic oil is by using crushed garlic and olive oil. Heat a little olive oil, add the crushed garlic and let stand for at least an hour to bring out the properties of the garlic. When the oil is ready, strain it and add three drops in the ear three times a day. If you prefer, eating raw garlic wil also help with the infection from the inside.

Camomile is an antiseptic, reduces inflammation and soothes the body so it is also a good and easily-made home remedy for ear infections.

You just have to mix a teaspoon of warm olive oil with two drops of chamomile. Apply three drops in your ear, three times a day to improve your symptoms.

Other essential oils that can help you treat and fully recover from an ear infection are:

  • Eucalyptus, since this plant effectively fights infection. If you want to do it at home, check out our article how to make eucalyptus oil.
  • Lavender because it is considered an excellent natural anti-inflammatory.

Applying a hot compress to the affected ear will also help to ease your pain. This solution is ideal to reduce inflammation so you can use a compress along with any of the other home remedies that we've already discussed for a speedy recovery.

It is important to see your doctor if the infection is in a young child, lasts for more than three days or if your high fever won't go away. If this is the case, a medical antibiotic treatment may be necessary.
