A diet lacking iodine is a health problem, and iodized salt was the first solution put forward to tackle this problem. Iodine is an essential mineral for the body. Its benefits are mainly related to hormonal activity, for example having adequate iodine levels prevents hypothyroidism.

We could consider the sea as the kingdom of iodine! Foods with iodine include fish and seafood, such as herring, prawns, shrimp, cod, mussels, salmon and sole. Also high in iodine are fish oils such as cod liver oil. Seafood such as shrimp and cod provide more than half of the daily dose of iodine needed. Fish has a very interesting and comprehensive vitamin content. It has different B group vitamins and fat soluble vitamins among which we an highlight vitamin A, vitamin D and to a lesser extent vitamin E, the latter mainly presented in the liver of white fish and the meat of oily fish.

Vegetables with iodine include onion, garlic, beets, chard, spinach, cucumber, green beans and watercress. Sea vegetables, such as edible seaweed, are very high in iodine. In fact, a single serving of kelp contains four times the daily requirement of this mineral: about 2000mcg. Garlic, besides being rich in iodine, has antibacterial qualities.

Condensed skimmed milk with sugar has an iodine contribution of 89 mg per 100 grams of product. Follow-on milk powder formula: For every 100 grams consumed of this food, our body can extract up to 79 mg.

By consuming cheese you also contribute iodine to your body, 100 grams provides our body with 74 mg of iodine. Cheddar cheese: For every 100 grams consumed of this food our body will receive 39 mg of iodine. Cheese portions: This food provides our bodies 38 mg. of iodine per 100 grams. Manchego cheese in oil: For every 100 grams consumed of this food our body will receive 34 mg of iodine. Manchego cheese semi-cured: 34 mg. iodine. Fresh manchego cheese 34 mg.

Some cereals such as rice, wheat and rye are rich in iodine. For example, in the case of corn flour: In 100 grams of this food we can find 80 mg. iodine.
